Congress passed a law in 2016 mandating that bulbs
Incandescent bulbs only last about 750 to 1000 hours of use.
I have replaced most of the incandescent bulbs in my house, but not the decorative lights in a couple of the bathrooms.
I hadn’t noticed up to that time, but I sure got headaches forever afterward. CFLs are nothing more than regular fluorescent bulbs twisted into more or less the shape of an incandescent bulb and outfitted so that it can be screwed into the same kind of socket. Unfortunately, I don’t know of anyone who really likes the kind of light that comes from fluorescent lights. That’s a real bummer for reading, because it means you have to wait several minutes before you have enough to read by.
Fluorescent lights require mercury, so a broken one becomes a hazardous waste. CFLs, therefore, do not represent a new technology.
Compared to the old incandescent 100w bulb, new bulbs would have to provide the same amount of light, 1600-1700 lumens, but use no more than 72 watts of power.
Currently two technologies are available that meet that standard, with a third one in the wings.
Halogen bulbs resemble incandescent bulbs in appearance and use.
They also have a tungsten filament, but it is enclosed in a quartz envelope.
Now, it appears that CFLs that put out 1600-1700 lumens, the equivalent of a 100-watt incandescent, would fit in that fixture. At least he didn’t start quoting Tea Party slogans. It amazes me how many people think the Obama administration has banned incandescent light bulbs and wants the government to decide what American consumers can buy.Too often, the glass at the base of the bulb, apparently weakened by the heat, broke off when I tried to unscrew it.What a mess to go through before I could get to the next sentence of whatever it was I was reading!
